How to read the Nutrition Facts table on food packages

Health Canada requires food manufacturers to provide an ingredient list and a Nutrition Facts table on packages to inform shoppers about the contents and nutrients in their products. Remember that for each product you choose, it is only one of many foods you will eat in a day. The Nutrition Facts table is based on a 2,000 calorie diet.

The Nutrition Facts table lists calories and 13 core nutrients calculated from the serving size.

The Ingredients list itemizes all the foods and additives found in the product beginning with the ingredient used most. For example, if sugar is listed first, the food has a lot of sugar in it.
