Restaurants quench thirst for nutrient information
Date: 01-03-2012
As of February 1, 2012, Health Check items at restaurants will be accompanied by select nutrition information right on the menu or menu board. While the Health Check logo has been guiding Canadian diners towards healthy menu choices since 2006, starting this winter, Canadians will have even more information up-front to help them make a well-informed decision.
Health Check has taken a leadership role in nutrition labeling since it launched in grocery stores in 1999, by stipulating that all products in the program display a nutrition facts panels on pack. This was several years before thegovernment made this a mandatory requirement on all food packaging.
“We always strive to be ahead of the curve in helping consumers make informed decisions about healthy food choices,” says Terry Dean, Director of Health Check.
Each menu item in the program must meet specific strict nutrient criteria, established by Heart and Stroke Foundation’s registered dietitians based on the recommendations in Canada’s Food Guide in order to be eligible to enter into the program.
In addition to prominently displayed nutrition information on the menus and menu boards, the participating restaurants will continue to have nutritional information brochures explaining the 13 key nutrients available upon request.
