Health Check awarded for innovative campaign encouraging healthy choices

Date: 11-18-2011

Ottawa-November 15, 2011.  The Heart and Stroke Foundation Health Check program received a prestigious national award for its leadership in an innovative pilot project that rewarded British Columbia (BC) consumers with bonus AIR MILES for making healthy food choices in the grocery store.

The Foundation was selected for the Corporate Social Responsibility Award (non-governmental organization) for a campaign in BC in June 2011 that incented residents to buy fresh produce and Health Check items by rewarding bonus AIR MILES loyalty points for these purchases. The project was carried out in partnership with AIR MILES, BC Safeway grocery stores, and the BC government.

The results were impressive with BC consumers buying more fresh produce and Health Check products during the four-week pilot than ever before. The campaign’s success was the result of all sectors – government, non-government and industry coming together to create social change and promote the health of Canadians.

“The campaign was a concrete and creative way to encourage consumers to make healthy food choices,” says Bobbe Wood, President, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. “It harnessed the reach of AIR MILES, connected with consumers and directly rewarded them for purchasing healthy foods.”

The Corporate and Community Social Responsibility Awards are presented each year at the Corporate and Community Social Responsibility Conference (www.ccsrconference.com). They recognize outstanding contribution and excellence in carrying out and following the core values of social responsibility. They are awarded to organizations and individuals who demonstrate an ongoing and unwavering commitment to the achievement and creation of shared value for their organizations and the community.
