What is Health Check?

Health Check can help you eat well!
Choosing healthy foods can sometimes be difficult. The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Health Check program can help you choose foods in grocery stores and restaurants that can be part of a healthy diet.
There are over 2000 Health Check products in grocery stores representing 200 brands in 75 food categories. Click here for a full list of Health Check grocery products. Health Check menu items are also available in over 700 restaurant outlets across the country. Click here for a list of participating restaurant chains.
All grocery products and menu items displaying the Health Check logo meet the nutrient criteria developed by the Foundation’s registered dietitians based on Canada’s Food Guide. Food companies and restaurants have no involvement in setting the criteria.
Health Check is a not-for-profit program open to all food companies, grocery retailers, food marketing associations and restaurant chains.Food companies and restaurants voluntarily submit products or menu items for evaluation by our registered dietitians.
Companies and restaurants must earn the right to display the Health Check logo by meeting the program's nutrient criteria. Upon qualifying for the program, participants pay a modest annual fee to cover program costs and to develop tools around healthy eating. Health Check is not a fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Following a healthy and well-balanced diet is one of the most important things you can do to achieve overall health. Health Check helps you identify healthy food choices to achieve an overall healthy diet. If you have special dietary needs, you should consult your healthcare professional.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation encourages you to take an active role in your health. Visit the Healthy Eating section for tools and information developed by the Foundation's registered dietitians to help you make healthy eating choices.
“When you see the Health Check symbol on a food package or restaurant menu, you know the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s registered dietitians have evaluated this item and it can contribute to an overall healthy diet. Look for the Health Check symbol to help you make wise choices.”
