Sodium Tips

To reduce sodium in your diet:

  • Choose fresh foods prepared with little or no salt most often.
  • Season foods with herbs and salt-free spices, lemon, vinegar, garlic and onion.
  • Prepare home-cooked  meals, with little or no added salt, as much as possible.
  • Limit your intake of salty condiments like pickles, olives, soy sauce, relishes and salty dressings.
  • Reduce or avoid salty processed foods like deli meats, salted crackers, seasoned prepared rice and noodles, soups and salted nuts. Choose ones that are reduced in sodium, such as those in the Health Check program.
  • Check the Nutrition Facts table and compare products. Choose foods with a lower % Daily Value (%DV) for sodium.
