Restaurant Overview

Canadians eat out an average of 11 times every two weeks.

For example, going out to restaurants with the family and friends, lunch at work in the cafeteria, or ordering take out and bringing it home to eat – it all adds up. Because we tend to eat more and more meals and snacks that are prepared away from home, many people are concerned about how healthy the meals are that they are consuming.

The good news is that more and more restaurants are offering healthier menu options and becoming part of the Health Check program.

The Health Check symbol on menus is a reassuring sign that lets you know that the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s registered dietitians have reviewed the menu item to ensure it is part of a healthy diet.

Only restaurant menu items that have met or exceeded the nutrient criteria as set out by the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s registered dietitians, are part of the Health Check program.
