Nutrient Criteria
The Health Check nutrient criteria are developed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation' registered dietitians based on recommendations in Canada's Food Guide and are reviewed on a regular basis. Other factors that influence the criteria include:
- scientific evidence
- advice of volunteer experts on the Health Check Technical Advisory Committee and the Strategic Advisory Council
- policy directions of the Foundation
- purchasing patterns of Canadians
- market realities.
In December 2007, changes to the Health Check nutrient criteria were announced that were based on the revisions to Canada's Food Guide. Nutrient criteria were added for the first time for trans fat and sugar, and changes were made to some broad categories for fat, sodium and fibre. Any new products must meet the changes immediately and products already in the program have until December 28, 2009 to comply.
In September 2008 significant changes were announced to the Health Check sodium criteria. Any new products must meet the changes immediately and products already in the program have until November 1, 2010 to comply.
