Planning

Planning is the first step to healthy eating. It is possible to have healthy meals and snacks all week long if you plan in advance. A few simple steps will start you off on the right track:

  • Remember that your trip to the grocery store starts at home. Before you go grocery shopping, plan your meals and snacks for the week. Get out your recipes to help you decide what groceries you will need to buy for both meals and snacks.
  • Consult Canada’s Food Guide to ensure you and your family are getting the recommended number of daily servings in each of the four food groups.
  • Make a list. Once you know what you will need, check your cupboards and write everything down. Try to group your list according to the sections in the grocery store so it is easy to follow.
  • Don’t forget to bring any coupons or flyers you have to save some money.
  • Make sure you eat before you shop.
  • Keep a well stocked pantry with healthy staples so you have what you need on-hand to be able to prepare a healthy meal.
  • Plan before you dine out as well. Choose restaurants you know offer healthy choices. Ask restaurants for nutrition information when you arrive or visit their website before you go to compare choices.
