Nutrient Criteria - Restaurants
Health Check is designed to improve the overall health of Canadians by helping consumers easily identify healthy food choices when eating out. Menu items must meet the Health Check nutrient criteria.
Based on recommendations in Canada’s Food Guide, the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s team of registered dietitians developed Health Check’s criteria for the following nutrients:
- Fat (quantity and type)
- Fibre
- Sodium
- Carbohydrates
- Protein
- Vitamins and Minerals
Detailed information on the program’s nutrient criteria is available here.
The criteria for each nutrient is based on scientific evidence, labeling regulations, nutrition trends as well as the eating habits of Canadians. Given the ever-changing discoveries in the health industry, nutrient criteria for the Health Check program may change going forward. Recent changes to sodium, trans fats and fibre criteria reflect Health Check’s proactive commitment to health.
With Health Check, eating out and eating healthy can go hand in hand.
