Minimizing the Risk of Trans Fats
The best way to minimize the risk of trans fats is to choose foods that have little or no trans fats present. Choosing lower fat dairy products and lean meats helps reduce total fat and any small amounts of trans fat naturally present in these foods. When it comes to pre-packaged foods and fast foods:
- Read the Nutrition Facts table on food labels and choose foods with no or minimal trans fat.
- Look for products with no added trans fat, or ones with the least amount of trans fat.
- Choose a soft margarine that is non-hydrogenated and trans fat free.
- Avoid fried foods and breaded foods as much as possible.
- Look for Health Check products in the grocery store.
- Look for restaurants that are part of the Health Check Restaurant program.
