Mixed Dishes
Combination Foods refer mainly to soups and mixed dishes. A mixed dish generally includes foods from 2 or more food groups. Examples of mixed dishes include:
- casseroles
- frozen entrees / dinners
- stews
- pizza
- lasagna and other pasta dishes
- vegetarian and meat pies
The nutrients provided by these types of dishes will vary depending on which food group ingredients are present. Sometimes an entire food group serving is represented in the dish, while other times only a partial serving of a food group would be present.
Many combination foods are sold in grocery stores – as frozen entrees or at a hot table or deli counter. While some are nutritious choices, many are high sources of fat and sodium.
