As the tables fill with all things chili and cheese-flavoured, and houses get packed with all those rooting for Tom Brady due to his inherent coolness and smouldering good looks and those hoping for a Eli Manning’s repeat victory, Super Bowl parties are an occasion when friends with opposing jerseys become enemies, and strangers with like-minded support become friends.

The only thing that all participants have in common is the food fatigue resulting from an overdose of football and heavy foods.  The friendly banter between our two registered dietitians, Samara and Ariadne, debating who has the better Super Bowl spread has soon turned to foodie battle when they decided to pit their two Super Bowl menus against one another.  Who will score the winning touchdown when it comes to snacks? Who will have to throw in her apron in defeat?  Who will extend the possession of their ladle? Our judges will decide. Let the battle begin.

Team Samara has had a good season with great passes, touchdowns and a nutritional blitz or two.

"Ok. I’ve got my game face on for this Super Bowl challenge. By the first down football fans everywhere will be screaming for more of my delicious treats. Having a husband who played professional football (CFL) I know all about Super Bowl parties and how to design a menu that is in line with standard Super Bowl fare, delicious and healthy all at the same time.  I'm certain the judges will give me the winning score along with an endzone dance once they review my recipes.  Touchdown!" - Samara

She is bringing the following foods to the referees:

Team Ariadne is a newcomer to the Health Check team, but holds her own on the field of nutrition, defiantly challenging unhealthy foods wherever she goes.

"I have put together a Super Bowl menu that will satisfy any football fans.  After living in Texas for several years, football has been a big part of our lives and to me a football game is not a football game without chicken wings and chips and salsa.  Over the years I have adapted these to make them healthier.  This menu is filled with flavours, colours, and simply good tasting foods... a meal that will make you feel good about cheering your team to the big win!" - Ariadne
