Survey shows support for healthier dining

Ontarians want healthier menu choices in restaurants and culinary professionals want to make sure they get them.  According to a recent Health Check survey, in which 31 members of the Canadian Culinary Federation participated, there are many ways to  that restaurants can help Ontarians make healthier choices.

Below are some highlights from the study:

  • Majority of the respondents believe that consumers should be encouraged to make healthier choices when dining out and a variety of healthy menu selections should be available.
  • More than half of the respondents said they believe that consumers need assistance to make healthy choices when dining out.
  • Some respondents said that in order for consumers to be successful when selecting healthy options while dining outside of the home, they should have an understanding of Canada’s Food Guide.
  • Majority of the respondents also thought that more training should be available to restaurant professionals for the planning and development of healthier menu items
  • Many respondents relayed there should be reduced fat and sodium menu choices available, as well as "a standard" for portion sizes.
  • Majority of the respondents agreed that verification from a trusted authority should be printed on the menu.
  • More than half of them were aware of the Health Check program.
  • Majority of the respondents said they would support the Health Check program.
