Here is a story of two men that keeps me moving:

Mark, an accomplished researcher in neuroscience (and my boss at the time), for a New Year resolution decided to start running.  I don’t know the details for the reasons behind the motivation to start running, but my guess is that the little extra weight had something to do with it.  So with the same dedication that he puts in his life, January came along and Mark started running.  In addition, he made some major changes in his eating habits and now could be seen eating fruit for snacks and whole wheat sandwiches and low-fat yogurt for lunches.  I am guessing that his knees were giving him some problems and so he started alternating between running and mountain biking in the back country of Georgia.  It did not take long for everyone to start noticing the change.  Firstly, Mark had lost a significant amount of weight and was continuing to lose weight.  Secondly, he seemed so happy and unstressed.  Now, nine years later I am guessing Mark is still enjoying exercising and enjoying life to its fullest.

Bob, an accomplished city manager (and my father–in-law), on his 59th birthday decided he would run a marathon before his 60th birthday (I’m guessing it had been on his bucket list for a while).  So he began his journey from the very beginning since he wasn’t even running 1 km at the time and he joined a marathon running group.  Just as Mark had put his dedication to exercising, Bob also had great dedication and could be seen running in the streets of his neighbourhood for months.  During his second race in preparation of the marathon, Bob had to be transported out by Emergency Medical Services.  Bob had failed to eat breakfast and drink before the race, and the Texas heat had gotten to him.  That did not stop him, but he does now eat a little something before his runs and makes sure to hydrate throughout.  Bob ran his first marathon four months before his 60th birthday.  Now, five years later he has completed four marathons and eight half-marathons.

Bob and Mark are proof that it is never too late to make healthy changes in your life!
