Healthy eating around Hanukkah can be a bit of a challenge.  Many of the traditional holiday foods are fried, such as latkes and soufganiot (or jelly donuts). But we certainly don’t have to celebrate the incredible account of the Menorah burning for 8 days on one day's worth of oil by pouring 8 days worth of oil into our bellies!

For those interested in making their traditional recipes lower in fat and more nutritious, here are some suggestions to make your latkes a little healthier, without sacrificing taste:

  • Bake the latkes instead of frying them- this way you use much less oil
  • Add other veggies to the potato patties such as spinach, broccoli, zucchini or make sweet potato latkes
  • For latke toppings, swap sour cream with an unsweetened apple sauce
  • Scrub your potatoes clean and keep the skin on- this way you conserve more of the nutrients and fibre

If anyone has other healthy Hanukkah tips, please feel free to share.

Happy Hanukkah!
