When I do personal counseling, I am always amazed by the differences in attitude in people. Some people, who would be considered healthy by most, are eager to make some positive changes to their almost-perfect diet, whereas others, who would need to make some major adjustments, do not think they need to and would consider themselves very healthy. And then you have all the people in-between.

The secret to ensure that you are successful in trying to be healthier and in taking your health into your own hands is to take small steps towards improvement.  Whatever your health situation is and whether you need to make small or large changes to become healthier, here are 20 simple things you can change in your diet and lifestyle today:

  1. Switch to a lower fat milk (if you are drinking 2% try 1%)
  2. Take the salt shaker off the table and use herbs for more intense flavour (it won’t take long for you to start enjoying the less salty flavours)
  3. Make sure you have at least one portion of fruit and/or veggies per meal (be sure to vary the colours)
  4. Make sure you have 3 meals and 2-3 snack per day; this will discourage overeating at mealtimes
  5. Try a  lower fat or lower calorie version of your favourite food
  6. Try brown rice instead of white rice, or whole-wheat pasta instead of white pasta
  7. Drink 4-6 glasses of water every day
  8. Pack your lunch; this way you have control over what’s in your lunch and can determine its healthfulness
  9. Look for a breakfast cereal with more fibre
  10. Choose lower fat cheeses
  11. When baking, experiment with reducing the sugar or substituting the fat with unsweetened apple sauce
  12. In the morning, skip the butter on your toast and try peanut butter or lower-fat cheese instead
  13. Try a low-fat or fat-free salad dressing on your salad
  14. Choose lean or extra-lean meats
  15. Use a small amount of oil (olive or canola) when cooking instead of using butter or lard
  16. Turn off the TV (try watching 30-60 minutes less every day) and be active instead
  17. Go to bed earlier (sleep is underrated)
  18. Take the stairs instead of the elevator
  19. Park your car at the end of the parking lot instead of driving around for 5 minutes to try to find the closest parking spot possible
  20. Give your pantry and fridge a makeover; get rid of the high sugar and high fat foods (out of sight;out of mind) and make room for healthier food.

Which one will you try today?
