Lunch & Snack Menus

Health Check wants to help you plan healthy lunches and snacks for your kids to take to school. The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s registered dietitians have put together five weeks of healthy snack and lunch menus. Healthy lunches and snacks provide kids with the needed nutrients and energy they need to do well at school.
The menus contain a variety of new recipes you can try. Another great alternative is to pack last night’s dinner leftovers in their school lunch boxes or roast a larger chicken or roast for dinner so you have enough to make sandwiches for lunch the next day. Planning ahead can really help with making lunches. Encourage your kids to get involved. Review the meal plans with them and see what they like and don’t like. Get them to individualize the meal plans to meet their needs. Have them participate in packing their own lunches and snacks.
Many schools have milk programs which will make it easier to ensure your kids are getting cold milk at lunchtime and snacks. If your school doesn’t have a milk program, ask how you could get one going.
Try to stock up on lots of vegetables and fruit and whole grains. Your goal is to aim for two food groups for snacks and three to four food groups for lunches. Have fun and be creative.
